Whimsical Watch ReplicaLANCASTER - The legacy of the Thayer family can be found all over Lancaster, from the mansions the family lived in, to the buildings, including town hall and the library, they donated. For the most part, it is the men in the limelight.
On Sunday, March 14, Heather Lennon will be presenting a program, "Remembering the Ladies: The Women of Lancaster's Thayer Family," from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Dexter Room of the Thayer Memorial Library, 717 Main St.
The library is named for the Thayer family and the meeting room is dedicated to Nathaniel Dexter, a descendent of the family.
The program, which is free, is sponsored by the Lancaster Historical Society and co-sponsored by the Lancaster Historical Commission.
"While information on the men of this prominent local family is more readily available, the women, though very much a part of the scene, were not written about in any depth," Lennon said. "Sometimes, they are only noted in a few lines of an obituary notice. The ladies, too, had their stories to tell and they deserve notice, not only for their accomplishments, but also for the touches of elegance they added to Lancaster, especially during the Gilded Age."
Lennon, a historian who has penned two books on Lancaster's history, "Images of America: Lancaster," in 2001, and "Images of America: Lancaster Revisited," in 2005, was particularly attracted to the story of Pauline Revere Thayer.
Pauline lived from 1864 to 1934. She was the great-granddaughter of Paul Revere, who created the bell in the First Church of Christ Unitarian..
Fake Puma"Though born with a famous name, she came from a family of modest means," Lennon said. "After she married Nathaniel Thayer (1851-1911) of Lancaster and Boston, she became actively interested in her husband's many philanthropies. After his death, she enlarged the nature and scope of these with a dynamic energy that was the marvel of her friends. A leader in the Boston society of her day, she also became involved in politics in the later decades of her life."
Michael Sczerzen, chairman of the Historical Commission and Historical Society, said the program should give an interesting view of Lancaster history.
"As the saying goes, behind every good man, is a good woman," Sczerzen said. "Into the early 1900s the Thayer families summered in Lancaster, and they employed many local citizens. Heather Lennon's efforts to research and interview descendents of these Thayer women is a testament to her love of Lancaster, and we look forward to her presentation.
"Annette Morris of Lancaster often speaks of her Girl Scout experience when her troop was invited to visit at Mrs. John Thayer's home," Sczerzen said. "Mrs. Thayer taught the girls to set a proper table. The Thayer women left a long legacy to this town. Come and share your memories of the Thayer families. Schedule your calendar so you don't miss this program."
Lennon grew up in Lancaster and developed her interest in its history by "soaking up the atmosphere."
"I believe the program will be of interest to those who have lived in Lancaster for a long time as well as new residents who want to learn more about their town," Lennon said." History buffs, genealogists and students looking for information to do reports might also enjoy it."
Library Director Joe Mule said the room can hold 68 people.

Special to The Virginian-Pilot
The fourth and 11th presidents, James Monroe and James K. Polk, share more than their first names.
ESQ Watch ReplicaBoth began life under modest circumstances. Each had commanding political mentors; Monroe's was Thomas Jefferson, Polk's was Andrew Jackson. Although the country gained in size and prosperity under their administrations, both men have been largely marginalized by the failure of historians to examine their records more closely.
Perhaps because of the accomplishments of the three Virginia presidents who preceded him - George Washington, Jefferson and James Madison - Monroe's contributions are somewhat shrouded. In Polk's case, he was one of the most unlikely nominees to gain the White House. A Tennessee native, he lacked the skills and traits of a natural leader, yet he was tenacious in achieving his goals and was the consummate politician in an age of giant politicians, such as Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster and Thomas Hart Benton.
Gaining the Democratic nomination in 1844 on the ninth ballot - and faced with sectional differences over annexing Texas, the tariff issue and a surging antislavery sentiment - Polk pledged he would serve only one term. Rather than becoming a lame duck, he rose above electoral politics and focused on passing a formidable legislative agenda.
Polk was able to reduce the tariff and to re-establish an independent Treasury. Yet it was in Hermes Handbags increasing the size of the nation by a third that he left his mark. Texas did come into the union, and he outmaneuvered Great Britain from the contested lands in the Pac-ific Northwest known as the Oregon Territory. After a two- year war with Mexico, California and much of the Southwest were added.
As for Monroe, he "was not only the first Revolutionary War hero since Washington to win election to the presidency, he had embellished his laurels with what the public perceived as a glorious military and diplomatic victory over the British in the War of 1812." In the White House (1817-24), he earned praise for opening the West and engineering the nation's remarkable economic recovery into the "Era of Good Feelings."
Monroe brought to the presidency almost eight years of experience as an American diplomat in the taxing posts of Paris, London and Madrid. He was a powerful, assertive leader - as fearless in the Cabinet room or in Congress among politicians and intellects as he was on the battlefield among soldiers.
Movado ReplicaHis most enduring legacy is the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the United States would not tolerate any foreign interference in the Western Hemisphere.
Though neither book plows much new ground, readers unfamiliar with the two presidents - or those with a special interest in them - will be well rewarded by perusing these two well-crafted biographies.
