THOUSANDS of youngsters turned out for one of Glasgow's biggest summer events.
Children from across the city took part in a range of fun-filled activities, as part of yesterday's National Playday.
Playday is the annual celebration of children's right to play - a national campaign involving children and young people in locally organised events.
The mixture of games and sports, which took place at venues across the city, including Glasgow Club Nethercraigs and Glasgow Green, were organised by Glasgow Life.
This year's event was themed Our Place, and was aimed at encouraging young people and families to have fun in their own communities.
tiffany rings Councillor George Redmond, from Glasgow Life, said: "It was fantastic to see so many young people take part in the fun activities on offer, from aqua walking to treasure trails there was something for all ages.
"The summer holidays are traditionally a time when young people enjoy playing with their friends.
"Through the Playday activities and our summer-long Zest programme, we have provided an excellent range of free activities in welcoming and safe environments."
The Glasgow events were a huge success with youngsters and included activities such as den building, arts and crafts, aqua walking, wacky races, tiny tots play areas, storytelling, sand play, circus skills, dance, athletics, football and much, much more.
Councillor Redmond added: "Encouraging young people to play and express themselves can only help them develop healthy and active lifestyles for the future."
ed hardy hoodies"Judging by the smiles on the faces of the many families who took part, it has been a success."
More than 700 separate summer activities have been taking place across the city as part of the Zest programme - a collaboration between Glasgow Life, the City Council and the voluntary sector.
Jerseys Glasgow Life held a series of events at play centres across the city, including the Queen's Park Glasshouses, Linn Park Adventure Playground, Cranhill Beacon and All Saints Secondary School.
The events aim to show the benefits of playing outdoors, including developing children's friendships, promoting safety and improving youngsters' communication skills.
Now in it's 23rd year, Playday is the biggest play sector event in the UK, and is traditionally held on the first Wednesday of August.
Previous years have seen children take over town centres, parks, woodlands, and even beaches.
Last year more than 830 events took place across the UK, and this year is set to be even bigger.

A POPULAR play scheme for children is likely to be scaled back because its lottery funding is running out.
The Gloucestershire Play Rangers scheme was set up following a Pounds 750,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund children''s play programme.
However, with schemes in Cheltenham, the Cotswolds and Tewkesbury due to end in April, play leaders say without extra income activities will have to be reduced.
Play rangers allow children to take part in free activities, from learning camping techniques to outdoor play.
Cheltenham summer team leader, Becky Meek, said: "It's a big shame. The kids that come to our sessions often don't have basic skills like cooking on an open fire. And a Tiffany Necklace Frank-Gehry lot of children wouldn't have tried vegetables before. They learn a lot and we have seen them grow in confidence.
"It's a safe environment for children and we have a good relationship with parents and the community."
The rangers are split into four teams - Cheltenham, the Cotswolds and Tewkesbury, Gloucester and the Forest of Dean. Children from across Cheltenham have benefited from activities in areas including Hester's Way, St Paul's and Oakley.
Pip Levett, director of play for the county, said: "It's been fantastic running play areas across Gloucestershire.
"For a lot of kids our events have been the highlight of their week. Play is more important now than ever before with so many distractions such as TV and computers. Our presence has put a lot of parents at ease in allowing the kids to run around and play on their own outside.
"It's an awful time to be trying to find secondary funding. This time last year we were quite optimistic that funding would continue. Now we are seriously concerned about keeping Gloucestershire Play Rangers going."
Cheltenham's funding was due to run out this December, but because the borough council had underspent it was able to apply successfully for an extension.
Craig Mortiboys, healthy communities partnership manager, said: "We value Jerseys the work they do. The problem is that in this financial climate getting that level of funding is difficult. We will support them in their application for funding.
"It will be almost impossible to keep up the level of service that has been provided with the help of this lottery funding."
The Big Lottery Fund distributes profits from the lottery to appropriate causes and projects.
Gloucestershire Play Rangers will apply for further funding, through the Big Lottery Fund, from the Reaching Communities Scheme.
They plan to combine their Cheltenham and Gloucester teams and have one urban team plus one rural team.
Pip said: "We have had a fantastic amount of money in the last few years and it is unrealistic to think it will continue. We have to be tactical."
The charity will pitch for funding in the coming month and hope to receive an expression of interest by the end of August. Pip said: "We have fantastic play rangers that I'm desperate to keep hold of."
The charity is also appealing for individual and corporate donations.

Its current inhabitants are 950 mannequins waiting to be dressed. But soon Debenhams will be opening its store in Bath to thousands of customers after a wait of more than 20 years.
The flagship store of the SouthGate development will open on September 2 and a team of six visual merchandise experts from Debenhams are already busy decking it out, adjusting a shelf here and a mannequin arm there.
The ceramic floors are gleaming and the building contractors, Simons Construction, are scheduled to hand over the keys on August 12.

There are plenty of features that suggest this store will be far from your run-of-the-mill retailer.
Its free personal shopper section has its own suite of dressing rooms complete with huge mirrors, while the adjoining customer service area has its own bureau de change.
The lighting in the store's long changing rooms is activated by sensors, enhancing the feel of luxury.
Spread over four floors, there is 85,000 sq ft of trading space, with an additional two floors of office and stock room beneath.
Cosmetics, fragrances and women's accessories are among accessories are among the departments on the ground floor, while the first is dedicated to women's wear and lingerie. Branding for Jacques Vert, Wallis, Phase Eight and Mantaray is already poking out from behind protective screens.
Men's and children's clothing dominate the second floor while the top level features homeware and a 95-seat restaurant with striking purple and green furnishings. Contemporary images of Bath adorn the walls.
Senior store manager Robert Gough is both excited and confident four weeks ahead of the grand opening.
"We have been looking for a store in Bath for more than 20 years and until now we could never find the right location - we wanted to do the offer properly," he said.

The Bath store has created more than 200 new jobs for the city, with up to ten per cent of the positions being given to the long- term unemployed. And more vacancies could be on the horizon.
Mr Gough said: "If the store does particularly well then we will bring more staff in. I'm confident we will do well."
He believes the Pounds 360 million SouthGate shopping development is the ideal location for Debenhams' long-awaited arrival in Bath.
He said: "If you compare this with the old So

At last, a government response to the financial crisis that is actually working. Am I referring to last November's VAT cut? Of course not; it has been as ineffectual as we all said it would be. Those loan guarantee schemes for struggling small businesses? Nope, still very little sign of them, I'm afraid, months after they were announced and re-announced.
Quantitative easing? Oops, sorry, much of the first wheelbarrow load of new-minted cash has disappeared abroad, to foreigners who jumped at the opportunity to offer their gilt holdings back to the Bank of England - while the Bank has been struggling to sell new gilts to investors perturbed by signs of a rift between the Governor and Downing Street.
No, on most fronts, things are more pearshaped than ever. But the successful policy I'm talking about is Gordon Brown's campaign to persuade us that it's better to vent our anger on bankers than on him. The first big breakthrough came last week, when the Edinburgh home and car of ex-Royal Bank of Scotland chief Sir Fred Goodwin (now said to be holed up in Majorca with his family, for fear of more attacks) suffered criminal damage. This week, the strategy has borne fruit beyond the Prime Minister's wildest hopes, with a cavalcade of anti-capitalist, anti-war and save-the-planet activists marching on the Bank of England, besieging dressed-down City workers in their Indianapolis-Colts locked offices, and no doubt trashing a few fast-food outlets as they pass.
Unintended outcomes are the overarching theme of the financial crisis, and this week's disruption of London is just one more: social disorder is perhaps the most frightening of all possible consequences of a severe recession, yet by signalling that banker-bashing is morally justified, Brown has actually managed to encourage it. Indeed, the extent to which he has got more than he wished for is matched only by the tragic extent to which he has promised more than he can deliver.
Expectations of a positive outcome from the G20 meeting have been managed downwards so vigorously that any agreement on anything - on taking the lid off some of the world's tax havens, for example - will be declared a triumph. But in truth the only green shoots the gathering is likely to fertilise this spring will be in the glazing and contract security sectors, and it will have been an extraordinarily tiresome couple of days for everyone else who struggles to make a living in the capital.
The question is not whether the G20 encounter, in the incongruous Excel Centre in Docklands, comes to be seen by historians as the event that set the world on the path to recovery - it might, but let's not get our hopes up. The more pertinent question today is whether its unintended symbolism of posturing leaders surrounded by howling anarchists jogs the public consciousness in a positive direction. By that I mean that if the whole thing descends into chaos, it might have the perverse effect of teaching us to forgive the financiers and even learn to love them again.
wholesale discountDon't get me wrong, I'm all for a spot of youthful protest now and then - and I know bankers can be loathsome. As I always point out, I should know, I used to be one. What Brown has tapped into and let rip is a deep seam of banker-hating that can be traced in British popular culture from the 1930s when J.B. Priestley wrote about the City doing to the working classes 'what the black-moustached glossy gentleman in the old melodramas always did to the innocent maiden', through the 1980s when a chorus of traders chanted 'Do the f***ing business, do the f***ing business' in Caryl Churchill's play Serio
